The Jeffreys Bay surf community came out in full support of the Supertubes Surfing Foundation’s call to prevent the building of a nuclear power station at nearby Thuyspunt. 200 – 250 people donned either black or yellow T-shirts and formed a human NO nuke sign on the Supertubes beach, the venue of the annual Billabong Pro surf event.

Five years ago, our good friends over at Surfing Magazine in the USA had a brainwave: let’s dedicate one day of the year to celebrate surfing and, well, go surfing… The day, 20 June, was documented around the world and quickly became a global phenomenon. Soon people were doing more than catching a few waves and recording it. They were organizing beach cleanups, rallying support for environmental issues, and raising awareness around the ocean.

Sea Shepherd – Taiji Dolphin Surfer Protest
Less than 24 hours after professional surfer and Sea Shepherd supporter Dave Rastovich led an international group of over 30 surfers, celebrities, and musicians on a peaceful paddle-out ceremony to honor the more than 25,000 dolphins killed each year in Japan, fishermen in the tiny village of Taiji resumed the slaughter that had been delayed by the increased worldwide media attention.
